The Google Link: operator

There are many ways for webmasters to check the number of links they have to their sites from other sites. This is considered important as, generally, the more links there are to a site, the higher it will rank in the search engine search results like Google and Bing. Google do provide an operator, the google link: operator which is a command that can be used to find a small random sample of links to a site. The problem with the google link: operator is that it is just that, a small random sample. Many newbie and inexperienced webmasters use the google link: operator and think they have been penalised by Google or that Google is not finding all the links to their site, based on the results they see in the sample. In really, the google link: operator probably should not be used as it is not useful for anything.
