The Diabetic Foot

Diabetes mellitus is rapidly becoming and extreme burden to society in terms of costs and to the individual in terms of stress and hassles, as well as the costs. Diabetes affects so many organ systems such as the eyes, kidney and heart. The diabetic foot is also a big problem. Thos is due to the complications of diabetes mellitus putting the foot at increased risk for damage from things like trauma, cuts, bruises, rubbing from shoes, etc. Sometimes the joints get destroyed resulting in a condition known as the charcot foot. In the worst cases of the diabetic foot, infection spreads and becomes so well established, that the only treatment is an amputation of the foot or even the leg. Those with diabetes need to take extreme care of the foot and leg to make sure that none of these complications of the diabetic foot develop. They need to check the shoe for any rubbing or objects in them. They need to seek urgent care any time there is any sign of redness or trauma. All of the healing processes in the diabetic foot are impaired, so prevention is the best form of treatment.
