Shin Splints

Running is a great way to keep fit, but it is not without its dangers. Each year many runners get an overuse injury that limits the amount of running that they can do. One of the more common of these is an injury that is commonly known as shin splints and medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome. Shin splints gets its name from a leg injury that is common in horses. Shin splint causes include things like doing too much running too soon and not building up the distances run slowly enough. Biomechanical problems such as pronated or flat feet also contribute to the problem, as can a worn out pair of shoes. Some also consider tight calf muscles to be a factor. Shin splints symptoms usually start off on the inside of the tibia bone and are usually only painful on probing or palpation. With continued running, the symptoms then interfere with the training routine. Shin splints treatment is usually substituting some other form of exercise, such as cycling while the injury heals. The training error need to be discussed with the athlete, as well as the use of appropriate foot orthotics and running shoe advice. The prognosis for shin splints is usually good if the rehabilitation is carried out properly.
